Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (1975)

July 12, 1975

The Screen:'Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold'

Published: July 12, 1975

"Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold" is a trashy black exploitation movie, but its six foot two inch star, Tamara Dobson, who plays the title role, forestalls all criticism by coming on like one of nature's androgynous wonders.

No one in his right mind would attempt to criticize a mountain peak, a sunset or hurricane. Miss Dobson is a large, beautiful, overwhelming presence whose real sexuality is denied by her movie role (that of a karate-chopping narcotics agent) and by costumes that seem to have been designed for a female impersonator.

The setting is Hong Kong. The adversary is the Ms. Big of the international drug trade, a lesbian known as Dragon Lady, a character that the irrepressible Stella Stevens plays for something more than the little it's worth.

The film, which opened yesterday at the Criterion, Apollo and 86th Street East Theaters, is a sequel to "Cleopatra Jones," the 1973 film that was defended in some quarters as being an example (though admittedly a fantastic one) of how black brothers and sisters might get together to clean up the hometown neighborhood. In this expansionist nonsense, the hometown neighborhood has been reinterpreted to include a British Crown Colony.

CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD, directed by Chuck Bail; written and produced by William Tennant; based on characters created by Max Jullen; director of Photography, Alan Hume; editor, Willy Kemplen; music, Dominic Frontiere; a Run Run Shaw/William Tennant production, distributed by Warner Bros. Running time: 96 minutes. At the Criterion Theater, Broadway at 45th Street, Apollo Theater, 125th Street near Eighth Avenue, and 86th Street East Theater, 86th Street near Third Avenue.
